Headaches & Whiplash

Repetitive strain or traumatic head or neck injury (such as whiplash) can lead to painful conditions such as severe muscle knots in the head or neck. These knots can cause headaches, facial pain, or refer pain to sites distant from the hypersensitive muscle knot.

A therapist evaluates a patient with headache from whiplash.

MRT® has proven effective in softening or inactivating trigger points, making deep muscle work more responsive to treatment. The resulting benefits of MRT include:

  • Improved flexibility
  • Reduction or elimination of pain
  • Ability to return to normal life activity

Mettler Institute routinely treats headaches and whiplash with excellent and lasting results.

Headaches

Headaches come from many sources. Two common sources can be treated with MRT.

Low cranial blood pressure can be caused by accumulated scar tissue in the neck—leading to poor circulation. Scar tissue in the neck area commonly comes from the accumulated impact of hunching over computer screens and general posture, or from tension and stress leading to constant engagement of the neck muscles.

The second primary cause of headaches is also due to tension and stress as muscles of the head and neck become tight, leading directly to headaches. MRT is extremely effective in treating these types of headaches.

Whiplash

Did you know that whiplash can affect the neck and cause injury in car accidents only at 5 miles per hour? Did you know that whiplash can occur without being diagnosed by an emergency room doctor?

If you suffer from neck pain following a car accident or trauma to the neck, you could be suffering from whiplash. Whiplash is an unexpected shock to the muscles in the neck and head as they try to help keep the head in the right position. Consequently, those muscles respond quickly and with great force often leading to pain. As a result of the pain, many people protect the neck by not moving it which can lead to more muscle and tissue tightness and dysfunction. This pain can be debilitating and life changing. It is important to address any pain early in the process to help with recovery and function.

At our Mettler Institute location, our highly trained staff provides a unique manual therapy treatment and exercise approach to help guide you through the recovery process safely and quickly. This innovative treatment has been shown to be effective either soon after the acute phase or many years after the injury has occurred.
