Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)

Dr. Mettler started his career specializing in temporomandibular disorders (TMD). He has trained his team to be experts in this field using techniques such as therapeutic exercises, posture, MRT®, joint mobilization and other forms of manual therapy.

Mettler Institute has significantly faster recoveries for patients with TMJ/TMD as a result of these combined therapies versus other approaches.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)

Have you wondered if you should have pain when you chew or if you should hear “clicking and popping” in the jaw when you open your mouth? Do you wake up in the morning barely able to open your jaw without stiffness and soreness? You could be suffering from TMD or temporomandibular disorder of the TMJ (temporomandibular joint).

Often people are told that the only way to treat TMJ syndrome is with specialized hardware from your dental provider or to just live with discomfort. Just like other muscles and joints in the body, the muscles and joints that form the jaw and its functions can become irritated and painful. This happens as a result of bad habits (chewing nails or lots of gum), increased stress (clenching the teeth), and poor posture (tightening of the neck and jaw muscles). As a result, those muscles become strained and can form tissue adhesions adding strain to the joint in the jaw and the ability to chew and open properly.

Physical therapy at Mettler Institute can help relieve your jaw pain. The unique practice of MRT, joint and tissue mobilization, and proper exercises for posture and movement can help return the joy of eating and smiling.
