Researchers identify compounds that could lead to an on-demand, short-term contraceptive for men

In a mouse research, researchers funded by the National Institutes of Overall health have determined a possible non-hormonal contraceptive that men could consider soon just before sexual action and have fertility restored the future day. Scientists gave male mice a compound that briefly disables soluble adenylyl cyclase, the enzyme critical for activating a sperm cell’s ability to swim and mature so that it can journey by the feminine reproductive tract and fertilize an egg.

In several exams, the researchers confirmed that the compound TDI-11861 rendered mouse sperm cells immobile and prevented them from maturing. The compounds did not interfere with the animals’ sexual functioning. Whilst male mice mated with females, no pregnancies had been noticed. Sperm recovered from feminine mice remained incapacitated. The authors did not observe any aspect consequences in the male or feminine mice. The compound wore off a few hrs afterwards, and males recovered their fertility.
